Feel good story of the month – Kentucky songwriter pens an instant classic
When Campbellsville University chamber choir director, Frieda Gebert was recently listening to the radio, she heard a news report that President O’bama would be sending additional troops to Afghanistan. Reminiscing how her own parents would play “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” to soothe their separation during WWII she wondered what could be done for our troops heading off to war.
She ‘pitched’ the idea to her colleague, Matthew Hodge of Louisville, the choirs’ pianist. He thought it was a great idea and got to work on it. As a matter-of-fact he accepted the challenge on a Tuesday and had completed the musical piece by the following day – lock, stock and barrel.
On Thursday the choir rehearsed the song and then performed “What Is Christmas?” on Friday. The choir received a standing ovation. But, the story does not stop there.
Campbellsville University board member Buzz Cason, who happens to own a recording studio in Nashville, invited the choir down on December 9th to record the Christmas song.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
