Courier-Journal – Nearly 1,000 joyous civilians welcomed an equally happy Kentucky Army National Guard unit home from Iraq yesterday. The returnees were 146 members of Battery C of the 2nd Battalion of the 138th Field Artillery based in Bardstown.
Gov. Steve Beshear and Maj. Gen. Edward Tonini, adjutant general of the Kentucky National Guard, shook the hands of all the soldiers as they got off the plane.
The combat veterans weren’t supposed to make contact with loved ones until later, but many couldn’t resist — and frequently children and wives broke out of the waiting multitude to embrace their soldiers of choice as they passed by.
“This feels good, real good,” said Sgt. James Miller, of Bardstown, as he hugged his wife, Stephanie, and 7-year-old daughter, Paige. The first thing he wanted to do, he said, was “eat some American food.”
