BAGHDAD — Small groups of mourners gathered today at Saddam Hussein’s tomb to lay flowers and recite the Koran in honor of the ousted dictator who was hanged a year ago.Security forces braced for possible violence in Baghdad and the Sunni Arab heartland north of the capital, where Hussein’s chaotic execution heightened the alienation many Sunnis feel under Iraq’s new Shiite rulers.
Curfews were imposed in the flashpoint cities of Baiji and Dour, and extra checkpoints popped up in Tikrit. But there were no immediate reports of violence associated with the anniversary.
